Early Life and Education
Alexey Mordashov was born on September 26, 1965, in Cherepovets, Russia. His father was a steelworker, and his mother was a nurse. Mordashov attended the local school in Cherepovets and went on to study economics at Leningrad State University, where he earned his degree in 1988.
Early Career
After graduating from Leningrad State University, Mordashov started working as an intern at the Cherepovets Steel Mill. He worked his way up through the company and eventually became the head of the mill's financial department in 1992. Mordashov played a crucial role in turning around the company's finances, which were struggling at the time.
The Birth of Severstal
In 1996, Mordashov was appointed CEO of the Cherepovets Steel Mill, which had been privatized and renamed Severstal. Under Mordashov's leadership, Severstal grew rapidly, acquiring several other steel mills in Russia and expanding its operations overseas. Today, Severstal is one of the world's leading steel producers, with annual revenues of over $7 billion.
Investments and Business Interests
Besides leading Severstal, Mordashov has invested in several other businesses over the years. In 2003, he acquired a controlling stake in the gold-mining company Nordgold. Two years later, he teamed up with fellow Russian billionaire Vladimir Potanin to buy a 25% stake in Norilsk Nickel, the world's largest producer of nickel and palladium.
Mordashov has also invested in several technology startups and is a co-founder of the investment firm, S-Group Capital Management. In recent years, he has focused on developing sustainable businesses and has invested in several renewable energy companies.

In 2003, he was awarded the Order of Friendship by Russian President Vladimir Putin for his contribution to the country's economic development.
